Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch later this year—maybe October, maybe later—but one thing seems all but certain now: the open-world juggernaut will carry at least an $80 price tag.
Nintendo was the first to cross the line back in April, when it confirmed that Mario Kart World would be $80 on Switch 2. It was the first time the company charged above $70 for a single game, and fans weren’t thrilled. Today, Microsoft piled on, announcing across-the-board price hikes for consoles, controllers, and its first-party titles. When the holiday season arrives, Xbox’s flagship releases will also sit at $80.
Much of this price creep is tied to Trump’s volatile tariffs, which Nintendo has explicitly cited as a factor, while Microsoft has implied the same given the disproportionate price increases in the U.S. compared to the U.K. For now, Sony is the lone holdout—but this is the same company that has already raised console prices multiple times. Expect it to join the $80 club sooner rather than later.
All of this clears the runway for Rockstar. Take-Two probably intended to charge $80 (or more) for GTA 6 anyway. Before Nintendo and Microsoft made their moves, Rockstar might have been wary of the optics of going first. The backlash, the negative headlines—it would’ve been ugly. But now? The sticker shock has already landed. By the time Rockstar announces its price, most players will have accepted $80 as the new normal.
And let’s be honest: Rockstar could charge $300 and still sell millions on launch day. This is Grand Theft Auto 6 we’re talking about. The most anticipated game in a decade. A project with a massive budget and a decade-long dev cycle. There was never a world where this thing launched at $60, and probably not even $70.
The only question left is how bold Rockstar wants to get. $80 feels inevitable. But could it push to $90? $100? A few months ago, that would’ve seemed unthinkable. Now, it doesn’t sound so far-fetched.
🎮 Player Tip
If you’re planning to pick up GTA 6 on day one, brace yourself for premium editions. Rockstar has a long history of bundling bonus content, online currency, and early access perks into pricier tiers. The $80 standard edition will likely be just the starting point.
