Easier to Locate Your Apple AirPods Pro 3: iPhone 17 Boosts Precision Finding Distance by 1.5x

On September 16, it was announced that the Apple AirPods Pro 3 will officially ship on September 19 (this Friday). While this earbud can be considered a significant upgrade, one of its new features will be exclusive to iPhone 17 and iPhone Air users.

Have you ever lost your AirPods? Apple is well aware that many users have faced this issue, which is why they’ve upgraded the charging case of the AirPods Pro 3 to make it easier to locate.

Apple’s website describes the feature as follows: “Easily find your AirPods Pro. The charging case uses next-generation ultra-wideband technology, extending precision finding distance by 1.5 times; it also comes with a speaker, so even if it falls into the couch cushions, it's easy to find.”

The core of this new ultra-wideband technology is the Apple U2 chip, which has been included in iPhone 15 series models (initially named "second-generation ultra-wideband chip"). In contrast, the AirPods Pro 2 charging case only features the U1 chip.

However, the 12th note on the AirPods Pro product page adds a qualification to the “precision finding distance increased by 1.5 times” feature: “This data is compared with AirPods Pro 2. The optimized precision finding feature requires the AirPods Pro 3 to be paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 17 series models; availability may vary by region.”

Therefore, to experience the newly upgraded precision finding feature in the AirPods Pro 3, users must have an iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air model.

So, does the precision finding function still see some level of improvement when used with older iPhone models, just not as significantly? The answer is still unclear. Currently, the publicly disclosed information from Apple only indicates that the upgraded precision finding feature works best when paired with the new iPhone 17 or iPhone Air models.
