Square Enix’s large-scale remake project for Final Fantasy VII has been in motion for over five years. Two games have already been released, and fans are eagerly awaiting the so-called “final chapter.” In a recent interview with Wccftech, Hamaguchi was asked whether the team plans to release a DLC — similar to what they did with the first game (“Intergrade”) — to bridge the gap between Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the next instalment. Unfortunately, he stated that there are no such plans at present, though he offered a few intriguing details:
- Hamaguchi said,
“We did plan to make DLC for Rebirth. But when we re-evaluated project priorities and considered what players are most waiting for, we concluded that the thing they really want is to have Part 3 out as soon as possible.” - He added,
“That being said, after Part 3 launches, we could maybe make DLC for it. And once the Remake trilogy is concluded, the entire Final Fantasy series might reach a broader audience. At that time, we’ll actively consider whether to produce new DLC or to develop a full new game.” - Media commentary has pointed out that, even though Hamaguchi still describes the project as a “trilogy”, he explicitly referenced the possibility of a fourth entry, which has reignited hope among fans. After all, the original Final Fantasy VII story still leaves many questions unresolved.
- Suppose Square Enix wishes to continue the series further. In that case, one possibility might be to adapt the CG anime Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children into a game, allowing more players to experience that narrative in an interactive form.
Key takeaways for players/fans:
- The focus is squarely on delivering the third game as a priority.
- Don’t expect a major bridging DLC between Rebirth and Part 3 — resources are being directed toward that next full release.
- Post-Part 3, there is a possibility of additional content, whether in the form of DLC or even a completely new game (a “Part 4”).
• • For now, the trilogy remains “three parts”, but the door has been left open to extension.
