Bethesda Softworks veteran Bruce Nesmith recently spoke candidly in an interview with FRVR, admitting that the sci-fi RPG epic Starfield did not reach the same level of quality as Bethesda’s iconic Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series.
As one of the key designers behind The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Nesmith explained that Starfield’s heavy reliance on procedural generation was a major factor behind its shortcomings.
“When players realize that planets start to feel too similar and the excitement of exploration fades, the entire experience begins to collapse,” he said.
According to Nesmith, the game’s thousands of procedurally generated planets often lack distinctive characteristics, making exploration feel repetitive and hollow. While procedural generation allowed Starfield to feature a vast galaxy, it also led to a sense of monotony and detachment.
The Challenge of Space as a Setting
Nesmith further noted that the very nature of outer space contributed to the problem.
“Most of my work centered on astronomical data,” he explained. “But space, by its nature, is empty—it doesn’t provide enough stimulation to sustain player interest.”
He compared the experience unfavorably to the vivid post-apocalyptic world of Fallout and the fantasy landscapes of The Elder Scrolls, both of which offer rich, handcrafted environments full of surprises and narrative depth. In contrast, Starfield’s vastness sometimes comes across as sterile and impersonal.

Still, a Respectable Effort
Despite his criticisms, Nesmith maintained a generally positive view of the game:
“If Starfield had been released by another studio instead of Bethesda, people might judge it differently. It’s not as great as Fallout or The Elder Scrolls, but I still think it’s a good game.”
Bethesda’s Official Response
Bethesda has since responded to some of the concerns, acknowledging that improvements to the space-travel experience are underway. In a company statement, Bethesda confirmed that part of its development team is now focused on refining Starfield’s space exploration systems, aiming to make interstellar travel more engaging and dynamic.
Community Reactions
Nesmith’s honest remarks have sparked heated debate among players. While Starfield garnered massive attention thanks to Bethesda’s reputation, many fans agree it failed to fully live up to expectations.
In comparison to the rich legacies of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, Starfield’s future updates and expansions will need to address its lack of diversity and depth in exploration. Still, with Bethesda’s ongoing commitment to improvement, players remain hopeful that the game can eventually evolve into the interstellar adventure it aspired to be.
