September 19 — According to a report from tech media outlet Wccftech today, although CD Projekt Red’s main development center is currently focused on The Witcher 4, the company’s new Boston-based studio has already started working on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion.

Recently, CD Projekt Red published a job listing on its official website for a Lead Network Engineer, and the job description has sparked speculation among fans. Details are as follows:

You will join the development team of Cyberpunk 2 (the official sequel to Cyberpunk 2077) as the Lead Network Engineer. You will lead team members in designing network architecture and online systems, manage a talented team of engineers, and collaborate to ensure the stability and smooth operation of the game’s online systems.

Notably, the role requires applicants to have at least 7 years of programming experience in the gaming industry and 1 year of leadership or management experience. Candidates must be proficient in C++ and Unreal Engine, and experience in agile software development is a plus. The position offers the option to work onsite in Boston or remotely from the U.S./Canada, along with 20 days of paid annual leave.

Wccftech commented that this suggests the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is likely to feature a multiplayer mode. However, the original Cyberpunk 2077 had once promised a multiplayer feature back in 2020, but upon release the game faced severe optimization issues and heavy criticism from console players. CDPR had to postpone multiplayer development and instead prioritize fixing technical problems.

Later, CDPR decided to shift its multiplayer plans to future projects, leaving the original Cyberpunk 2077 without an online gameplay component.
