Nintendo Switch 2 Release Delayed, Development Team Prioritizing Game Optimization

September 6 — Since 2023, there have been numerous leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2 (NS2), with early reports suggesting a September 2024 launch. However, the console only debuted in the first half of this year.

Industry sources confirm that the Switch 2 has undergone several delays, with at least one being a shift “from late 2024 to early 2025,” something game developers themselves have verified.

According to a Bloomberg report on Wednesday, the reason NS2 was pushed back to 2025 is that Nintendo’s internal development teams repeatedly requested more time to polish their own titles for the new hardware. This ultimately led to the system launching this summer—an off-season window for major console releases.

Insiders note that third-party publishers and partners have been frustrated by the repeated delays, as it disrupted their release schedules. Some developers reportedly still don’t have access to official Switch 2 dev kits, which may explain why third-party titles could suffer from poor optimization at launch.

Although the specific development bottlenecks remain unclear, public information shows Nintendo has been investing in deep learning and machine learning since 2019. Working closely with NVIDIA, the company developed a custom T239 Orin Tegra chip for the Switch 2, featuring DLSS technology and 4K output support, designed to enhance graphics quality in both handheld and docked modes.
