On September 12th, Nintendo announced during tonight’s Direct that Metroid Prime 4: Transcending the Unknown will be released on December 4th, available on both generations of the Nintendo Switch console.
Nintendo also released a brand-new trailer, showing Samus no longer confined to decaying space stations or monster-infested caves. Instead, she will be riding a new flying motorcycle, racing across vast sand dunes, with visuals so striking they almost seem like a completely different game.
The development of this game has had a long and turbulent history, making it one of Nintendo's rare “development hell” cases. According to IT Home, the game was first announced in 2017—at a time when Reggie Fils-Aimé was still the president of Nintendo of America, the first generation of the Switch had just launched three months earlier, and E3 was still being held. It was during that E3 event that the game was first showcased.
The lengthy delay was due to Nintendo’s dissatisfaction with the early development results, leading them to completely restart the project in 2019. Since then, Nintendo has remained mostly silent about Samus' new adventure, only releasing two new Metroid Prime games in the interim, as well as a remake of the original Metroid Prime.
