Nintendo Officially Announces Super Mario Galaxy The Movie; Original Classic Game Coming to Switch

On September 12, during tonight’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo revealed the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. MovieSuper Mario Galaxy The Movie.

The film is scheduled for release in North America on April 3, 2026, and its title echoes Nintendo’s classic Super Mario Galaxy game. First launched on the Wii platform in 2007, Super Mario Galaxy was highly acclaimed for its unique outer-space setting and innovative gameplay. It was the first 3D platformer in the Mario series on Wii and marked a major innovation for the franchise.

Set against the backdrop of a vast universe, Mario embarks on adventures across tiny planetoids, planets, and space stations, rescuing the kidnapped Princess Peach and thwarting Bowser’s schemes. The game is regarded as one of the Wii’s landmark titles, receiving near-perfect scores from outlets such as IGN and GameSpot. Its distinctive spherical stages and gravity-based mechanics offered players a groundbreaking 3D platforming experience.

Super Mario Galaxy won multiple “Game of the Year” awards in 2007 and was re-released in 2020 as part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection on the Switch.
