Apple updated a support document on October 16, explaining in detail why iMessage messages may show “Not Delivered,” appear as green SMS/RCS messages, or be sent from your email address instead of your phone number.
Apple pointed out that these issues may occur if users do not activate their eSIM when setting up a new iPhone using iOS 26. When users choose to configure eSIM later in “Settings,” iMessage will not activate automatically.
This means that after completing eSIM configuration through the “Settings” app, users need to manually reactivate iMessage:
Open the “Settings” app and tap “App.”
Tap “Messages.”
Turn iMessage off and then back on again.
This recommendation mainly applies to users who skipped the eSIM setup step during the initial setup of a new iPhone. It may also affect users who switched carriers and manually configured a new eSIM in “Settings.”
This is at least the second iMessage issue affecting users since the release of iOS 26. Earlier this month, Apple released another guide to help iPhone users who were unable to activate iMessage with their phone numbers.
