Although the PlayStation 5 (PS5) generation has only recently gained momentum, plans for the next-generation console, the PlayStation 6 (PS6), are already underway.
PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny recently revealed that while the PS6 is still a few years away from release, development work has already begun.
In response to the slow adoption and underutilization of the PS5 in its early years due to supply chain issues, media outlet ComicBook has published an article outlining the five core features Sony must include in the PS6 to address current pain points and provide players with a cross-generational, immersive experience.
1. Commit to PS6-Exclusive Games to Fully Utilise Console Potential
The article points out that one major issue with the PS5 generation is that many developers still need to support the large PS4 user base, leading to new titles being "held back" and not fully leveraging the PS5's capabilities.
ComicBook strongly urges Sony to demonstrate a firm commitment to the new generation by ensuring developers can continue to release exclusive games that fully utilise the PS6's powerful performance, providing early adopters with a genuine upgrade experience.
2. Completely Revamp the Console's Design for Aesthetics and Practicality
The PS5's large size and unique shape have been criticised by many players, making it difficult to fit into standard entertainment centres.
The media suggests that the PS6's design should take inspiration from the PS4's clean, stylish, and practical style, altogether avoiding the PS5's bulky and hard-to-place form, allowing the console to integrate into any home entertainment environment seamlessly.
3. Achieve Cross-Generational Backwards Compatibility, Including PS3 Classics
Microsoft's Xbox has set a high industry standard by achieving a cross-generational game library sharing through backward compatibility.
However, PlayStation still lags in this area, with PS3 classics still "locked" on the original console.
ComicBook believes that the PS6 should at least achieve native compatibility with PS3 games, bringing hundreds of top-tier titles like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Infamous to the new console.
Additionally, ensuring that players' expensive PS VR2 headsets are also compatible with the PS6 would be a sign of respect and assurance for existing VR users.

4. Implement Full-Function Handheld Support to Create Sony's Version of the "Steam Deck"
With the resurgence of the handheld market, the PS6 generation needs a handheld device with full support capabilities.
Unlike the current streaming device, PlayStation Portal, the media expects the PS6 to launch a handheld device capable of natively running all PS6 games without compromise, truly bringing the PlayStation console experience to the mobile end and achieving a genuine "next-generation handheld."
5. Introduce Xbox's "Quick Resume" Feature
Currently, Xbox's "Quick Resume" feature allows players to seamlessly switch between multiple games, even after the console is powered off or hasn't been used for months, resuming exactly where they left off.
This feature is considered one of the "magical" functions of this generation.
While PlayStation's current quick resume function is limited to the last played game, ComicBook believes that the PS6 must significantly expand this feature, allowing players to more conveniently and smoothly switch between multiple games, further optimising the gaming experience.
