Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot: Multiplayer Will Be the Future of Far Cry 7

Ubisoft has confirmed that the Far Cry franchise is heading in a new direction, with a stronger focus on multiplayer gameplay. Speaking at the New Global Sport Conference in Saudi Arabia, CEO Yves Guillemot said the company wants multiplayer to become a core part of the series, ensuring players stay engaged for longer periods of time.

The comments line up with reports from 2023, which suggested that Ubisoft is working on both Far Cry 7 and a separate standalone multiplayer project. According to those reports, Far Cry 7 will switch to Ubisoft’s proprietary Snowdrop engine, leaving behind the Dunia engine that powered earlier entries. Meanwhile, the standalone multiplayer title is said to be a shooter set in the Alaskan wilderness, built around extraction-style gameplay.

The most recent entry, Far Cry 6, launched in 2021 with online co-op for the campaign, but notably lacked any competitive multiplayer modes. Since then, Ubisoft has moved the franchise’s development leadership back to its Montreal studio, putting a new team in charge of shaping the series’ future.

In 2023, Ubisoft appointed longtime Montreal producer Sandra Warren as Vice President and Executive Producer of the Far Cry brand. Drew Holmes, lead writer on Far Cry 5, also stepped up as the franchise’s IP Director, further signaling a refreshed creative vision for the series.
