News from September 5: Gaming media outlet Nintendo Everything published a blog post yesterday (September 4), reporting that Nintendo has updated its Switch Online Nintendo Classics app. On Switch 2 handheld mode, GBA games now support 1080P resolution, and a new button customization feature has been added.
The Game Boy Advance emulator under the Nintendo Switch Online service has recently been updated to version 3.0.0, bringing players three major improvements.
First, the most notable upgrade is 1080P support for GBA games in Switch 2 handheld mode. Although the system does not provide a manual graphics switching option, games automatically run at a higher resolution on the new hardware, showing a clear improvement over the original Switch’s 720p output. For players who prefer an authentic retro feel, options remain available to enable border mode or apply a “classic texture” filter with simulated scanlines.
Second, this update introduces button remapping, aligning the GBA emulator’s controls with those of the N64 and SNES emulators. Players can customize control schemes via the menu during gameplay, addressing the issue of default button layouts not fitting everyone’s habits.
The most delightful surprise is a hidden Easter egg: the classic GBA startup animation. After launching the app, players can trigger the original boot screen by wiggling the analog stick — a design choice that continues Nintendo’s tradition of adding nostalgic Easter eggs, as seen earlier this year in the GameCube app.
