September 7 News — Early last month, Bloomberg reported that Apple is developing its own generative AI search product and has set up a brand-new “Answers, Knowledge & Information” team for the effort. Although this team was only recently formed, its research results may reach the market much earlier than many expected.
Despite the long-standing criticism that Apple’s voice assistant Siri has lagged behind in AI capabilities, the company is clearly determined to secure a position in the generative AI race. This is also why Apple has been focusing on building a product capable of competing with Perplexity and ChatGPT, which was previously referred to externally as “Answers.”
According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter released today, Apple’s in-house AI search product may be closer to launch than anticipated:
“Taking the opportunity of rebuilding Siri, Apple has also been developing a brand-new search product — internally codenamed World Knowledge Answers (WKA) — designed to compete with Perplexity, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and similar tools. The feature is scheduled to debut in March next year alongside the new Siri, and could eventually be integrated into Safari and Spotlight search.”
Overall, Apple’s progress in AI is becoming increasingly clear. The company is still conducting “technology selection tests” to decide whether the next-generation Siri will rely on Apple’s in-house model or models from external providers such as Google, Anthropic, or OpenAI. From current information, however, this decision-making process does not appear to affect the planned release timeline for the new Siri and its AI-powered “answer engine.”
