In the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (released this past May), sharp-eyed fans noticed the presence of female police officers for the first time.
This detail quickly sparked discussion, with many speculating that the new entry will feature female officers appearing just as frequently as their male counterparts—breaking away from the series’ long-standing precedent.
Historically, the GTA franchise has included female police characters only in limited or peripheral roles. For example, GTA: San Andreas featured Barbara Schternvart (one of the dateable girlfriends, usually depicted off-duty), while promotional art for GTA V briefly showed Officer Vasquez. However, in most police raids or NPC encounters, female officers were almost entirely absent.

This absence has long been a point of debate. Public data shows that the United States currently has about 96,000 female police officers, accounting for roughly 12% of the total force—a far greater presence than depicted in the GTA universe. Some argue that Rockstar may have avoided designing female officers in earlier titles due to development cost concerns or fears of controversy around depictions of violence against female police.
In GTA 6, however, diversity seems to be a clear focus. Alongside the introduction of female protagonist Lucia, the trailer highlights a wider variety of female NPCs, ranging from gang members to civil professionals. With the inclusion of female officers, many players believe this will enhance both immersion and realism, while aligning with Rockstar’s vision for a more inclusive world-building approach.
Whether this shift will affect the game’s reception and overall player experience remains to be seen. The answer will come when GTA 6 officially launches on May 26, 2026.
