The iconic Call of Duty video game franchise is officially heading to Hollywood. Activision and Paramount jointly announced today that they have partnered to produce the first-ever live-action Call of Duty film.
In a joint statement, the two companies said the collaboration is “designed to bring the iconic Call of Duty universe to the big screen and deliver an unforgettable cinematic experience for fans worldwide.” No release date, director, or casting details have yet been revealed.
“As part of this milestone partnership, Paramount will develop, produce, and distribute a live-action film based on Call of Duty. The goal is to capture the core elements that fans love about this legendary franchise, deliver a thrilling experience to its massive global fan base, and boldly expand the series to new audiences. Both companies are committed to honoring the brand’s rich storytelling and unique style, promising an authentic and exciting experience for longtime fans and newcomers alike.”
Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison, a self-professed Call of Duty superfan with “countless” hours logged in the series, emphasized the weight of the adaptation:
“Activision and the global player community have entrusted us with this extraordinary universe, and bringing it to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”
Ellison further pledged that Paramount would apply the same “rigorous, uncompromising standard of excellence” that defined Top Gun: Maverick:
“We are determined to create a film experience that does justice to this one-of-a-kind franchise—one that excites Call of Duty’s loyal fans while captivating a whole new generation of moviegoers.”
Paramount has a mixed but notable track record with video game adaptations. Its Sonic the Hedgehog films proved both commercially and critically successful, while its Halo TV series—despite running for two seasons—was ultimately canceled.
