Players Discover Hollow Knight Silksong Cheat Code to Unlock “Steel Soul Mode” : Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right

On September 8, it was reported that “Steel Soul Mode” has long been a synonym for ultra-high difficulty in the Hollow Knight series. This mode challenges players to complete the game in one life — a single death deletes the save file. In the original Hollow Knight, players had to beat the game once under normal conditions to unlock this mode.

In Hollow Knight: Silksong, players are still required to complete the game normally to unlock “Steel Soul Mode.” However, on September 5, a Reddit user named Buttnugtaster posted that he had discovered the game’s “first cheat code.”

According to Buttnugtaster, by entering the sequence Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right in the Extras menu, the screen will flash quickly accompanied by a sound effect. After that, starting a new save file will reveal that the game has unlocked “Steel Soul Mode.”

It is worth noting that Hollow Knight: Silksong has two trophies related to “Steel Soul Mode”: one for simply completing the mode, and another for achieving 100% completion within it.

Editor’s Note: The code sequence “Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right” pays homage to Konami’s classic “Konami Code” from the 1980s on the Famicom (NES). It originally appeared in the home console port of Gradius.

At the time, a programmer working on Gradius added the sequence “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A” to make testing easier, since his gaming skills weren’t good enough to clear the game normally. The code was accidentally left in the final release.

This code was later carried forward in many other Konami games, with the most famous example being the “30 Lives Code” in Contra. By entering the sequence on the title screen, players could boost their starting lives from 3 to 30, drastically lowering the difficulty.
