As the PlayStation 5 marks its fifth anniversary this November, discussions about its successor, the PlayStation 6 (PS6), have started to gain traction. One feature that could be carried over from the current PlayStation generation is a detachable disc drive.

According to Insider Gaming, Sony’s plan to offer a detachable disc drive for the PS6 would help the company reduce production and shipping costs. This approach is also seen as a way for Sony to stay resilient amid "uncertain times," likely referring to the ongoing market volatility caused by U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration.

With this new design, consumers would have the option to choose between a traditional PS6 model with a built-in disc drive or a more affordable digital-only model. The latter could later be upgraded with the detachable disc drive. This is a departure from the PS5’s initial launch, which offered two separate models: one with a built-in disc drive and one all-digital model, with no option to upgrade the digital model. The situation changed when the slimmer PS5 revision introduced a disc drive attachment, and last year’s PS5 Pro model launched without a disc drive, though an external one could still be added.

Over the years, hardware costs have only risen. For instance, in Europe, the PS5 Digital Edition saw a reduction in its internal SSD, dropping from 1TB to 825GB, as part of a trend known as shrinkflation. Earlier this year, Sony announced price hikes for both the Digital and Standard Edition PS5 consoles across Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. In August, a $50 increase was applied to all PS5 models in the U.S. due to a "challenging economic environment," according to Sony.

One key aspect of the PS6 is that Sony intends to continue prioritizing hardware over cloud technology. In June, Sony President and CEO Hideaki Nishino reaffirmed that despite the growing adoption of cloud gaming, consumers still prefer "local execution" of games, whether through physical media or downloaded content directly to the console.
