Following the passage of the UK Online Safety Act, which requires platforms to implement age verification for “adult or age-restricted content,” Steam has introduced a credit card verification system for users in the UK region. If a Steam account is registered in the UK, users will need to take note of this new policy.
According to the official support documentation, users must submit a credit card to confirm their age and identity. If a card is already linked to their Steam account, no additional action is required—the verification will be completed automatically. Once verified, users will not face any restrictions on the platform. However, those who do not complete the verification will have their accounts restricted, preventing access to any age-gated content.
Alongside the rollout of this new policy and credit card verification system, Steam has pledged to protect user data and privacy. The company states that the verification process will not share information about users’ content preferences with payment providers or third parties. Instead, Valve will handle the process internally through its proprietary payment system, which has been independently certified under PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), ensuring a high level of security and reliability.
