The highest-level official DOTA 2 tournament, The International, kicks off today with its 14th edition. This year, TI returns to its country of origin — Germany — with the event being held in Hamburg.

TI14 features 16 participating teams, including Xtreme Gaming (XG), Yakutou Brothers (YB), and Team Tidebound from the China region. In the opening round of the Swiss stage, Xtreme Gaming faced Aurora, Yakutou Brothers took on Tundra, and in the 19:00 series, Team Tidebound went up against NAVI.

In the first day of the TI14 Swiss Stage, which concluded early this morning, China’s XG and Tidebound both secured consecutive wins over their opponents, advancing to the 2-0 group, while YB — competing as a substitute team — finished the day with a 1-1 record. Notably, XG’s position 1 player Ame died only once across five games, achieving a total scoreline of 46/1/44, leading his team to a dominant start.

This year’s TI opens with a Swiss format stage beginning on September 4, with all matches played as best-of-three (Bo3). After five rounds, three teams with four wins will advance to the International main event, while three teams with four losses will be eliminated.

Following the Swiss stage, there will be a Special Elimination round: the remaining 10 teams will face off based on their Swiss results, with 5 winners advancing to the International (Finals in the arena) and 5 teams being eliminated.

The International Finals (Arena Stage) will take place from September 11, lasting four days. The final 8 teams will battle at the Barclays Arena in a double-elimination bracket for the ultimate prize — the Aegis of Champions.

This year’s International consists of three phases:

  1. The Road to TI – Swiss Stage
  2. The Road to TI – Special Elimination
  3. The International Finals (Arena Stage)

The opening day features the first two rounds of the Swiss Stage.
