Why had GTA 6 taken so long? Was GTA V ever delayed?

Estimated read time 2 min read

When Rockstar announced in May 2025 that GTA 6 would be delayed to May 2026, few developers were happier than Sucker Punch. The delay meant Ghost of Yotei—set to launch on October 2, 2025—would no longer have to share the spotlight with what’s expected to be the biggest video game release in history.

Asked by MinnMax if the team broke out champagne to celebrate, co-creative director Nate Fox didn’t hold back:
"We're all still hungover. Multi-month hangover. That was a great day."

Originally revealed by Sony in April 2025, Ghost of Yotei’s release date had seemed perilously close to GTA 6’s. Now, with breathing room in the fall schedule, Sucker Punch can launch its samurai epic without worrying about being eclipsed by Rockstar’s so-called “AAAAA game” that one industry veteran claimed could “blot out the sun.”

A second playable character? DLC hints?

Around 1:20 in the MinnMax interview, Fox was asked if the game only features one playable character, Atsu. Instead of answering, he sipped his drink while giving a knowing look at the camera—a non-answer that fans will no doubt dissect endlessly.

The same thing happened when asked about single-player DLC: Fox stayed silent, smirked, and stared straight into the camera. It’s not confirmation, but it’s definitely the kind of coy teasing that gets speculation running wild.

Multiplayer Legends mode confirmed

What is confirmed is Ghost of Yotei’s free Legends mode, a supernatural-themed co-op DLC launching in 2026. Like Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends, it’ll remix the game’s combat into mystical, multiplayer missions at no extra cost for owners of the base game.

“You will see her butt”

Fox also leaned into one of the most unexpectedly beloved moments from Ghost of Tsushima: protagonist Jin Sakai’s onsen bath scene, where fans got an eyeful of his bare backside. This time, Fox promised, Ghost of Yotei’s Atsu will get her own onsen moment: “You will see her butt.”

Infamous remasters?

Finally, Fox touched briefly on Sucker Punch’s long-dormant Infamous franchise, saying it “would be great” if another studio stepped in to create remasters of the trilogy. Fox himself directed Infamous (2009), Infamous 2 (2011), and Infamous: Second Son (2014).
