The Information previously reported that Apple plans to remove the physical SIM card slot in more countries and regions this year, particularly with the introduction of the new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air / Slim.
However, leaker Majin Bu shared a set of images today showing that some iPhone 17 Pro prototype units still feature a physical SIM card slot. This suggests that Apple has prepared a backup plan for markets where launching an eSIM-only version of the iPhone 17 Pro may not be feasible.
For reference, all U.S. versions of the iPhone 14 through iPhone 16 have already eliminated the SIM card slot. When Apple launched the iPhone 14 series in 2022, it emphasized that eSIM is more secure than physical SIM cards, since even if an iPhone is stolen, the SIM cannot be physically removed.
Additionally, iPhones can manage up to eight eSIMs simultaneously, reducing the hassle of applying for and swapping physical SIM cards while traveling.
