September 6, 2025 – Build a Rocket Boy’s troubled title MindsEye has just received its fourth major update, as the studio continues efforts to turn around what has become one of the year’s most notorious releases.

The game, led by former Rockstar executive Leslie Benzies, launched earlier in 2025 to scathing reviews and currently holds the unwanted title of worst-rated game of the year on Metacritic. Despite its rocky debut, the team insists it remains committed to improving the player experience.

According to the patch notes posted on Steam, Update 4 introduces a wide range of quality-of-life improvements, significant performance upgrades, and numerous bug fixes. Build a Rocket Boy confirmed that work is already underway on Update 5, which will bring major enhancements to performance, combat systems, and enemy AI.

“We remain committed to refining MindsEye and delivering a better gameplay experience. More updates will continue to roll out,” the studio wrote.

A Rocky Road Since Launch

The game’s disastrous debut quickly drew comparisons to infamous flops like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum and South Park: Snow Day. Just weeks after launch in June, Build a Rocket Boy announced internal layoffs, raising concerns about the future of the project.

In a statement to IGN at the time, the company described the move as a “difficult decision,” noting it was exploring alternative roles for affected employees. The studio emphasized that the restructuring process would be transparent and fair, with more details to follow in the coming weeks.

Looking Ahead

While MindsEye has a long way to go before shaking off its negative reputation, Build a Rocket Boy appears determined to salvage the project. Whether these updates will be enough to win back players remains to be seen.
